Her body was almost skin and bone and the mange parasites were killing her slowly. 

At the time of her rescue, all her strength was gone. For those who are not familiar with the ravages of mange–it is a parasite which burrows beneath the skin. The starved condition of Cassie is probably because as the parasites advanced she ran and ran in an effort to flee from the terrible itchiness, and too, has scratched herself into exhaustion.
