He’d become lame with laminitis. His life was a series of days tied in darkness, broken during the wedding season in Rajasthan when he would be hired out to bear grooms in ornate costume, walking through noisy processions amongst fireworks and often-drunk revellers. A passer-by saw the tall, bleeding, emaciated and hobbling boy, and called Animal Aid to rescue him.
What a beautiful rescue it was. Patrick was completely sweet in every stage, willingly walking into the hydraulic lift box and arriving calmly at our hospital, where we began his treatment with reassurance and pain medicine. He had sustained a large chest wound, probably when a vehicle had rammed into him. He stood with dignity and patience for every wound dressing, his proud Marwari ears pricked forward, then back, then attentively forward again, his sensitivity and intelligence casting a kind of glow around him.
Here in Animal Aid, Patrick will stay throughout his “forever.” No more firecrackers. No more halter and chain, no more drunken owners or indifferent stable hands who fed him using a feed bag and owners who never once gave him pasture. Now, everything has changed! Patrick is slowly gaining weight, and quickly gaining friends. And he’s loved. Deeply.
