Hidden in the darkness of an empty room, a teenage puppy cowered in desolation, exhausted and depressed from a young life of pain.

Mange had taken away all his play, his hope, his appetite for food, and for life itself. When we rescued him he limply submitted, complying with every move we made, but not because he was cheerful and willing, but because he seemed to have lost both hope and resistance. But watch for the subtest signs of his emerging trust. His eyes grow softer. A paw reaches up at the end of a bath. He bows. Little Demetrius needed weeks to gain trust, but boy-oh-boy, when he discovered love, he arrived at a gallop! Love can replace fear.
