He crouched on the side of the road, probably just a few feet from where he had been struck by a passing car.
The sadhu (Hindu devotee) who called for our rescue waited until the ambulance arrived. When he reached the hospital’s treatment table his eyes seemed to say, innocently, without judgment, with just a hint of doubt, “What are you doing to me?” but then immediately they softened to “But OK, then, I’m ready!”
We treated him for pain, inflammation and examined the fracture, which needed a stabilizing splint. What a good boy he was throughout his several weeks of bed rest. And oH was it worth it. He stored up a whole lot of play, and Peter’s making up for lost time in radiant delight.
Angel with a broken wing; Puppy with a broken leg. Same difference.
